The majority of people attempt to get their life to a comfortable place and stress out when they continually face challenges and obstacles to achieving this goal. Even if they were able obtain this goal, it would not take long before they became bored and dissatisfied.
All the research shows that stress is primarily an internal process. The meaning we place on things will lead to the emotional reaction we experience. When you see adversity as something that impedes your comfort, it will cause you to react negatively towards it. However, when you view it as an inevitable part of life and a necessity towards attaining what is most meaningful in life it can energize you.
Not what I could accomplish, but who I could become
The shift for me came when my primary goal became not what I could accomplish but who I could become. Then every challenge was an opportunity to continue shaping me into all I was capable of being. I can't tell you how much anxiety and frustration making this realignment in priorities will eliminate from your life.
Have you ever witnessed someone winning the gold medal in the Olympics or after a Super Bowl win and how they break down in tears of joy? This is because of all the adversity and pain they overcame to achieve this goal. For them, the victory is priceless due to the cost they have paid.
Whatever your current struggle, today view it as necessary for shaping who you are becoming. Furthermore, develop a vision of where you are headed and how sweet it will be to stand there one day after everything you have endured. Really feel into it. Now go and head towards it!
