The most challenging part on the road to success in any endeavor is getting started. This is where the majority of people never get out of the driveway. They want to have the road perfectly mapped out prior to venturing out. Certainty and perfection are the death sentence to your dreams.
There is a difference between striving for excellence and being frozen in perfectionism. I have several clients right now who came to me in this condition. It seems the more talented and gifted you are the more prone you become to these impediments. I wonder how many brilliant ideas and inventions never made it past the drawing board or living room conversations.
Successful individuals believe in their resourcefulness
In studying the lives of successful individuals, one of the common traits they possess is the ability to act without full certainty, knowledge, or resources. It is an unwavering belief in their mission and their capacity to be resourceful that leads to their success.
The biggest resource we have been endowed with is our core emotions. Learning how to harness their power will allow you to live your best life and achieve your greatest dreams. In my podcast, The Key, yesterday, I was discussing how working as a trauma specialist has impacted my belief in what human beings are capable of achieving.
Having a front row seat to watching courageous individuals heal from the worst traumas you could imagine, has shown me the brain and body's ability to heal from anything. This has increased my level of belief of what were are capable of on the positive side as well.
The key is regulating your emotional state
When attempting to start any venture, whether it is helping others in a third-world-country or starting a business, it is the ability to regulate your emotional state that is the ultimate cause of your success or failure. This is the true essence of mindset. There is a reciprocal interaction between your mindset and your emotions - Your mindset can affect the emotions you feel, and your emotions can affect your mindset. To achieve your goals, you have to address each side of the equation.
If you are stuck in getting out of the driveway in regards to your purpose or vision, there is an internal conflict occurring. One part of you wants to pursue your passion, the other wants to protect you from emotional pain. Just as you have to address both your mindset and emotions, getting on the road to success necessitates increasing your passion and desire and decreasing your level of fear.
Increase your passion and overcome your fears
Doing so will lead to a tipping point allowing you to get going. There is never a perfect time to start. Over cautiousness is caused by the part of you that wants to protect you. The key is not to ignore this part of you but to balance it with the part of you that is hungry to attain your goals.
Today, work on each of these objectives: increase your passion and desire; and work to identify and overcome your specific fears. The road to success is never going to be paved smoothly, and the conditions will never be perfect. The best time to begin is now. Don't allow fear of failing to rob you of the life you were meant to live. I saw a great acronym for fail the other day: F - first A -attempt I - in L - learning.
Just start! You will figure it out as you go. One of my favorite quotes is by the renowned businessman John Astor, "The moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too."
John Hawkins Jr., M.S., L.M.H.C.
