I would say without a doubt most people do not enjoy what they do. At best, some find it tolerable. It is a rare few who have found their passion and pursued it when it comes to their occupation. I can't recall who said it, but I have always loved this quote, "Blessed is he who has found his work."
What a tragedy for all humanity that so few of us have found our calling in life and followed it. I know both sides of the fence so to speak. I have done countless jobs only to pay the bills, some of which I found completely miserable. I remember the Sunday night anxiety I would experience prior to having to return to a job I dreaded on Monday morning. Perhaps, you can relate to this. Contrastingly, I have been fortunate to now do what I love and find meaningful for a living.
3 keys to achieving a fulfilling life
I once heard a commencement speech by Steve Jobs in which he said if spends more than a few days doing something he finds miserable he focuses on the reality of his death. He stated this then motivated him to overcome any fears he had to make the necessary changes to redirect his life back to a more enjoyable and meaningful path.
I believe three things are essential to achieve a fulfilling and gratifying life direction: discovering your passion; identifying your aptitudes and abilities; and defeating any fears that stand in the way of achieving your dreams. I have written prior about how historically our education system has prevented countless individuals form discovering their type of intelligence or gifting. This is the place to start for most people. There are some great assessments you can take to begin the process of identifying your gifts and talents. It can be a little more difficult to uncover your passion. Learning what you are skilled at can narrow this search. Two great resources for this area are Ken Robinson's book, The Element and Simon Sinek's, Start with Why.
You are the one creating your own reality
Conquering the fears and limiting beliefs that stand in you way can be the most complex part of this process depending on your history. There are so many books, blogs, podcasts, and other resources to assist you in this objective. I try and speak to these themes on a regular basis in these posts. Moreover, you can listen to my podcast, The Key, where I and my partner dive deeper into these areas.
It is honorable to provide for your family or to be sacrificial at times. However, human life was not meant to consist of counting the minutes until the weekend. I believe everyone has a gift and a purpose. Don't let negative beliefs, fears, and past failures rob you of your calling. Life is meant to be lived and enjoyed. Take the time today to complete the steps I outlined. Your clock is ticking. Find the joy and meaning that is pregnant in every moment. Wake up to the fact that you are the one creating your own reality. If you do not like your current one, this means you have the power to change it. Do it now! Make the tough choices that will lead to a more purpose driven and gratifying life. You will not regret it.
One final word of encouragement: take the trip; get the better bottle of wine; ask him or her out; tell someone you love them; go to the concert; learn how to dance; start your business; take the class; jump!
