Those who are most satisfied, fulfilled, and at peace have developed an ability to ride the waves of life and not fight against them.

Facing reality as it is

The early part of my work with clients is often dedicated to helping them face reality as it is, rather than how they would like it. Although we will experience pain in life, the primary cause of our suffering is the resistance to pain; it will move through you much faster when you stop fighting to avoid it.

Contrastingly, many individuals find it difficult to enjoy pleasurable feelings. As a result of their history, it can leave them feeling exposed and unsafe or feeling guilty for doing so.

Developing a mindful practice

One of the most proactive things you can do to start increasing your ability to tolerate both painful and positive feelings is a daily practice of mindfulness meditation. The majority of people will assert to me they cannot meditate because they cannot stop their mental activity. Mindfulness meditation does not require you not to think but to observe your thinking non-judgmentally.

You can mindfully take a walk or engage in any activity with a focus on your present experience. This is a way of beginning to scale down the process of accepting reality as it is. Notice what you feel in your body as you are practicing mindfulness. Where do you feel it in your body? The world around us triggers sensations within us we term emotions. Once you have mastered the capacity to tolerate, understand, and use these sensations for effective action, you will master the world outside of you.
